Project information
Columbus, Texas is a modern community brimming with huge oak trees and an old fashioned feel. It’s situated halfway between Houston and Austin and offers residents access to big city life while living in a small town where they can raise their children in a stress free environment. At the heart of this city is the St. Anthony Catholic School Campus (SAS), an affiliation of the Diocese of Victoria. SAS has served generations of Columbus families since its inception in 1956 with a long history of quality education
Nevertheless, with the advent of the technological explosion and ever increasing competition to offer the best and most relevant education locally, SAS has embarked on the noble mission to expand their current facilities and offer a truly 21st century educational environment critical to the success of the school’s growing population and needs. Beginning with the project’s visioning, program and schematic design, JMB2 collaborated closely with the school/parish leaders and faculty to uncover the opportunities of designing a 21st Century Learning Facility, as it relates to their community. The answer is one that integrates the value system of “the four C’s”: critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity. The school’s design seeks not only to incorporate these learning truisms but also to weave the school architectural character and charm into the existing campus and community. The school has been organized into “pods” with common “break-out” spaces and flexible classroom organization. Specials offered include common community/school areas, robust art and science programs, and the campus centerpiece “the Learning Commons” with adjacent computer labs. SAS is truly a 21st century learning School reaching to the future.
